Common Treatment for Men and Women Treatments
Sexual health issues are inherently shared processes rather than individual ones. An infection or health problem detected in one individual often directly affects the partner's health as well. As Adana Special Life Center, we adopt the principle of treating the "couple" rather than just the individual, especially in communicable diseases. This approach not only cures the current disease but also prevents the recurrence (relapse) of the infection.
What is joint treatment (Partner treatment)?
Joint treatment is the inclusion of the patient's current or recent sexual partner in the treatment process regardless of whether they show symptoms, once a sexually transmitted infection is diagnosed.
Why is treating only one person insufficient?
Many sexual infections can progress without any symptoms (asymptomatic), especially in women and sometimes in men. If only the person showing symptoms is treated, the partner who shows no symptoms but is a carrier will re-infect the recovered person. This situation is defined in medical literature as "re-infection."
Basic conditions requiring joint treatment
There are certain types of infections where a definitive cure cannot be mentioned without partner treatment:
Bacterial infections
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea: These bacteria are transmitted very easily, and if present in one partner, the probability of it being in the other is over 80%. It is essential for both partners to complete the antibiotic course at the same time.
- Syphilis: In this serious disease transmitted through blood and contact, it is a public health necessity for the partner to undergo screening.
Viral infections
- HPV (Genital warts): Depending on the type of virus, wart control should be performed in both partners, and if necessary, immune-supportive processes or surgical interventions should be planned simultaneously.
- Herpes (Genital herpes): The risk of transmission is very high during active outbreak periods; couples must adhere to protection and treatment protocols together during these times.
Fungal and parasitic infections
- Trichomoniasis: This parasite usually causes no symptoms in men while causing severe discharge in women. If the man is not treated, the infection in the woman recurs after every recovery.
Ping-pong effect: The biggest risk in treatment
In sexual health literature, the "Ping-Pong Effect" refers to the situation where the infection constantly moves back and forth between couples.
- Mechanism: While one partner is treated and clears the microbe from their body, if the other partner (even if they show no symptoms) is not treated, the treated person receives the same microbe again through sexual contact.
- Result: As long as this cycle is not broken, the antibiotics used or the treatments applied remain ineffective. Moreover, this situation can lead to bacteria gaining resistance against antibiotics. Therefore, the "simultaneous prescription and application" protocol is fundamental at Adana Special Life Center.
Approach to couples in the diagnostic process
The joint treatment process begins with the simultaneous or coordinated evaluation of the couples.
Simultaneous screening tests
When an infection is detected in one partner, the following processes are implemented for the other partner:
- Physical examination: Visible lesions (warts, sores, etc.) are checked through urological evaluation in men and gynecological evaluation in women.
- Laboratory panels: Urine, blood, or swab samples are taken from both partners. PCR (Genetic Diagnosis) tests are used to definitively determine the microbial load and type in both individuals.
- Confidentiality and notification: In accordance with ethical rules, results are shared based on the individuals' consent. However, partners are encouraged to be transparent with each other for the success of "joint treatment."
Treatment protocols and medication management
Although male and female anatomy are different, the agents used to eliminate the microorganism are generally the same.
- Simultaneous start: It is vital for both partners to start drug treatment on the same day. This ensures that the microbial density in both bodies decreases at the same time.
- Different dosages: Dosages or types of medications are tailored to the individual by the physician based on body weight, metabolic rate, or accompanying diseases (e.g., the woman's pregnancy status).
- Completion discipline: All prescribed medications must be finished even if symptoms disappear within a few days. Treatments cut short cause hidden infections to recur more severely in the future.
Sexual life and restrictions during treatment
The most challenging but most important rule of the joint treatment process is temporary sexual abstinence.
- Duration: Usually, all types of sexual contact should be avoided for 7 to 14 days from the start of treatment (or for the duration determined by the physician).
- Reason: While medications are trying to kill the microbe, the tissues are still sensitive. Contact during this period can reset the healing process.
- The protection fallacy: The thought of "We are using condoms, nothing will happen" can be misleading during this period. Since some infections (such as HPV and Herpes) are transmitted through skin contact, full abstinence is the safest way.
Strategies to prevent future transmissions
After joint treatment is successfully completed, we recommend the following strategic steps at Adana Special Life Center to zero the risk of recurring infection:
- Vaccination protocols: Especially for viruses like HPV and Hepatitis B, vaccinating couples together is the strongest protective shield. One partner gaining immunity means a reduced risk for the other partner as well.
- Regular sexual health check-ups: Undergoing screening as a couple at least once a year ensures that asymptomatic infections are caught before they grow.
- Monogamy and barrier protection: In new partner situations, not neglecting condom use and being transparent about each other's health history are fundamental prevention principles.
Cost and process planning
Although the cost in joint treatment processes differs from individual treatments, it is a much more economical approach in the long run because it "prevents relapses."
Factors determining pricing
Scope of diagnostic panels: Items such as the "Extended PCR Panel" or "Hormone/Infection Screening" applied to couples are the main elements determining the price.
- Simultaneous applications: If there is a condition requiring surgical intervention in both partners (e.g., widespread warts/condyloma), the scope of these interventions is reflected in the cost.
- Medication and follow-up process: The number and frequency of follow-up tests (test of cure) after treatment constitute the process cost.
